6 Fun Ways to Support Black and Latina Businesses this Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month is here and you know the drill. In 2021 we’re on a journey together to diversify our spending year-round. This month we’ll do so with a specific focus on women-owned businesses in celebration of Women’s History Month. 

At the start of the year, we shared with you tangible ways to transform your spending and today, we’re expanding on that thread to provide you with additional ways to support Black and Latina businesses, creatives and entrepreneurs through your dollars.

Keep in mind that positive online reviews, social engagement (for example, a “like” on instagram or a “follow” on Twitter or Facebook), or a recommendation to a friend are all things you can do that go a long way. And you can do them each in less than 60 seconds. 

Here are 5 ways to do some spending with black and Latina women-owned ventures this month and beyond. Step out of your comfort zone. Try something different and form some new habits.

Podcasts

Streaming podcasts is a great way to provide financial support to hosts. Through your streams and shares, you increase their audience and their likelihood of being able to capitalize on their project. 

You can find podcasts on just about any topic these days. With so many women finding their voice and vocalizing their thoughts unapologetically, you can find one that you love. While you’re searching for the perfect show, start with this podcast by comedian Pheobe Robinson called  “Sooo Many White Guys”. The host has funny and compelling conversations with comedians, writers and actors who are all but “white guys”. She does a great job of tapping into the artist community. 

Music

Downloading albums, buying songs, and streaming drive royalties directly to your favorite artists. This is how artists get paid and make a living doing what they love. Be deliberate when choosing musical artists to support. This is a great way to support artists and discover new music.

Youtube

YouTubers get paid through sponsorships and based on number of views and advertising revenue generated. If you watch, they get paid. With so many resources on YouTube, there is enough information out there to fill thousands of libraries. As you may know already, some even create a whole life on YouTube as their full-time career.

Take a course

Online courses are an easy way to learn new skills or improve the skills you already have. And when you choose where to get them from – be conscious of how diverse your options are.  How you choose  can drive dollars to entrepreneurial women who are under-represented in the economy all around us. You can be their customer; and if you are happy with your experience, you can become their champion.

For Spanish speakers, we recommend a virtual cooking class with Chef Gisel Mieses of La Cocina de Gi. Her instagram page alone will have you drooling. From presentation to execution, Chef Mieses does it all. She is based out of Connecticut but connected globally through the virtual world. 

For non Spanish speakers, try taking a virtual art class with Kyia of At Peace Arts.  This class is amazing and you can choose to do it with friends and family too.
